The wonderful collaboration of Tairāwhiti Enviroschools with Tūranga Ararau, Te Kaunihera o te Tairāwhiti/ Gisborne District Council, Department of Conservation, Gisborne Airport, HB and JN Williams Trust, and Tairāwhiti Environment Centre has empowered young people of this area to engage in building knowledge and skills for restoration. A number of people have been involved in enabling and sustaining this intergenerational approach to caring for local waterways and biodiversity.

Empowered to make a difference: profiling an Enviroschools graduate

Ben Carson is a recent graduate of Kāpiti College. He was an active participant in the Enviroschools Network through the college’s Eco Action Group. To him, student empowerment means recognising and realising our capability to create change. He says that the Eco Action Group and Enviroschools helped him make the shift from being just interested, to being a changemaker. The Greater Wellington/ te Upoko o te ika a Māui Enviroschools team recently interviewed Ben to find out about how his experiences as a school student helped shape what he is doing now.

A collaborative project with Greater Wellington Regional Council, NIWA and Mountains to the Sea Wellington and with input from Victoria University, Hinonga Rimurimu connects young people with kaupapa oranga moana and in particular rimurimu (sea plants).
